Tortosa sits just 12 metres above sea level beside the Ebro river, sheltered to the north by the Cardó Massif, whose peak Buinaca lies within the town's boundary. Across the river rise the Ports de Tortosa-Beseit mountains, and the area around Mont Caro and other high summits is often covered with snow in winter.
