Soho developed from farmland into a royal park under Henry VIII in 1536 before transforming into a fashionable aristocratic neighborhood. By the mid-19th century, the upper classes had mostly moved away, and the area later gained fame for its vibrant nightlife, the independent British film industry, and its historic music clubs, before undergoing considerable gentrification starting in the 1980s.
