In 1929, King George V spent three months recuperating in Bognor, leading to royal consent later that year to officially change the town's name to Bognor Regis. Additionally, a seaside resort was originally developed here in the late 18th century by Sir Richard Hotham, and it is claimed that he and his resort are portrayed in Jane Austen's unfinished novel Sanditon.
