Perchée sur une colline boisée, cette forteresse médiévale domine la petite ville frontalière de Rode-le-Duc, à quelques centaines de mètres seulement des Pays-Bas. Construite au XIIe siècle, elle fut le siège du duché de Limbourg et un point stratégique convoité, passant tour à tour sous influence brabançonne et espagnole. Aujourd'hui, ses ruines romantiques abritent un musée et offrent un panorama unique sur la région des trois frontières. Détail méconnu : son donjon circulaire, rare en Rhénanie, servait aussi de tour d'observation pour surveiller les routes commerciales reliant Aix-la-Chapelle à Maastricht.

Herzogenrath (Ripuarian: Herzeroa; Limburgish: Hertseraoj; Dutch: 's-Hertogenrade) is a municipality in the district of Aachen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It borders the Dutch town of Kerkrade, the national border in one section running along the middle of a main road and even directly through the centre of the cross-border Eurode office complex.
