Jaca sits near the Pyrenees and the French border on the Aragón River, at the crossing of two great early medieval routes: one from Toulouse to Santiago de Compostela, and another from Pau to Zaragoza. It was the city out of which the County and Kingdom of Aragon developed, and served as the kingdom's first capital until 1096.
